James Bond's mission to North Korea, masquerading as a diamond smuggler, is compromised and he is captured and imprisoned. More than a year later he is traded for a Korean terrorist and released back to the British.

M revokes Bond's "00" status suspecting Bond of cracking under torture, however he embarks on a renegade mission to confirm his innocence and prove his suspicions that Gustav Graves, a millionaire diamond miner, is planning to use his new invention Icarus as a weapon of mass destruction.
